Byline
2014-12-14The Byline
Who wrote that byline?...
In newspapers, an article can be lengthy and
go into considerable depth on a topic. Bylines
usually are more compact, to the point and don't
usually run on for fear of losing the readers
interest.
Both the article and byline may be colorfully
worded, yet whereas an article might be slightly
biased, such as a Packers blow out of the
Eagles or the Bears, a byline contains a more
middle of the road opinion, as it may be read
by more people, being a short article.
An article also may go into great length on
a sports subject, and may use words such as
blow out, crushed, slammed and ran wild. In
a byline, such as mine,... as much as I'd like
to use some of those colorful terms, I remind
myself of just how diverse an audience my
readers are, and how some may be turned
off if I'm using those terms in describing their
teams loss. It's something to think of when
you take into account that not everyone who
reads this is a Fond du Lac Bears fan. For
me, it's easier to write about a close game
that's exciting, than try to find a un-bias way
to describe a blow out.
Last night, Friday December 12th, the Bears
ventured North to do battle with the DePere
Deacons. Once a fierce rivalry dating back
to the late 1980's, there have been many
close fought contests decided by only a goal.
As a new season arrived, one had every
right to believe the battles would continue.
It was the Bears whom struck the first blow
at 12:50 of the 1st, as #16 Mike Mathwig
found twine with #19 Ryan Smet and #17 James
Goodfellow assisting. A little over 2 minutes later
it was #18 Aron Holmes notching one for the
Bears as #27 Tyler Grebe assisted. With 2:28
remaining in the opening frame, it was #17
Goodfellow lighting the lamp with #20 Tom
"Big Cat" Glomski and #7 Casey Holmes
collecting assists.
As the 2nd period started, the Bears held a
3-0 advantage. In a tightly fought frame, it
was #24 Rob "Red" Coleman tapping in a
loose puck down low with 10:42 remaining
to boost the Bears to 4-0, as #16 Mathwig
and #20 Glomski collected assists.
In the 3rd frame, the lamps were lit by both
teams. #20 Glomski lit first, tallying 71 ticks
into the frame with #23 Cody Sokolik and
#24 Coleman assisting. With 11:38 remaining
#24 Coleman collected his 2nd tally of the
contest as #23 Sokolik and # Terry Kalata
assisted. Green Bay capitalized on a power
play with 9:52 remaining as #23 Carl Vanko
lit the lamp with #21 Ryan Cunniff and #2
Matt Pearson helping out. Fond du Lac answered
right back as #14 Cory Smith broke free 44
ticks later and found the back of the net.
Bears #21 Conrad Acheson visited the red
light district with 5:15 remaining, #17 Goodfellow
and #15 Mark Pontow collected assists. To
cap off a good night #24 Coleman registered
a hat trick with 3:57 remaining with #20 Glomski
and #23 Sokolik assisting. The Deacons never
gave up and #10 Max Rudolph found the cool
side of the pillow with 2:18 remaining with #2
Pearson notching the assist. The final tally came
as Bears #21 Acheson put the kitten past the
mitten with 67 ticks remaining, with #17 Goodfellow
and #19 adding assists. Bears #1 Randy Willis
was solid between the pipes, turning away 38
of 40 shots. The final: Bears 10 Deacons 2.
