Bears Season Comes to an End in GLHL Tournament

2019-03-31

The 2018-19 Fond du Lac Bears season came to a close Saturday afternoon after the team was eliminated from the GLHL Tournament.

It wasn't quite the tournament the Bears envisioned.

The Bears entered the annual Great Lakes Hockey League postseason tournament as the four-seed, drawing the Marquette Mutineers and host Mosinee Papermakers in Group C.

When the dust settled, the Bears season came to a disappointing end, having been swept in group play.

Friday (L, 8-6) vs. Marquette

Things started off promising for the Bears. The team got goals from Tyler Grebe and Ryan Smet 23 seconds apart just past the midway point of the first period to take an early 2-0 lead. By the time the first ended, Marquette would pull within one.

After trading two-goals apiece in the second, the wheels starting falling off the bus in the third, as the Bears surrendered three straight to then find themselves trailing by two.

With the extra-attacker on the ice, the Bears pulled within one late, but Marquette re-sealed the game with an empty-netter.

James Goodfellow, Ryan Smet, and Ryan Blick each posted three points led the team in scoring. Randy Willis stopped 51 shots in the loss.

Saturday (L, 7-4) vs. Mosinee

In the final group game of the weekend, the Bears were dealt a bad hand, but not an impossible one.

In order for the Bears to advance to the semi-finals in the tournament, they would need to beat the host Papermakers by three or more goals.

The Makers ended that dream early, posting four on the scoreboard to take control of the game.

The Bears would show some fight, outscoring the Makers 4-3 in the final two periods, but the hole was too big, and season came to a halt. Willis made another 59 saves in net in the losing effort. Goodfellow posted another three-point game to finish the weekend with six.
